Volunteering Opportunities

Unique volunteering opportunity
If you’re planning on travelling to the Kimberley region in 2011, then we have a unique volunteering opportunity for you.

The National Seniors Indigenous Skills Transfer and Exchange Partnership (INSTEP) and Kimberley School of the Air are seeking volunteers to assist at a school in an Aboriginal community on the picturesque Mitchell plateau – an area rich with history and cultural significance.

Volunteers will tutor students of varying ages from ESL backgrounds with their literacy and numeracy and assist in the delivery of their daily lessons. As a result of extreme shortages of accommodation in the community, volunteers in this region are required to have a 4WD vehicle and off-road van.

Cultivate a cultural walkway in Hope Vale
Hope Vale Aboriginal Council (Eastern Cape York) is seeking volunteers to supervise a “Green Army” workforce. The Green Army are developing a Guugu Yimidithirr walkway and park to showcase their culture and natural environment, enhancing the aesthetics of the main street of the community and providing an experience for visitors.

Initially we are seeking volunteers who are skilled in horticulture, landscaping, parks and walkway development, outdoor furniture construction or work crew supervision. We are also seeking volunteers with skills in historical research, graphic art or sign writing for local tourist and visitor sites to assist with the production of interpretive signs.

Help kids living in Alice Springs
The Yipirinya School at Alice Springs is seeking volunteers to assist in a number of areas to assist students and staff. We are seeking volunteers with skills in teaching, ESL, in-classroom support and supervision. Volunteers are also sought to provide workshops on art, music, sport, cooking, vocational experiences or other engaging extra-curricular activities.

The school would like volunteers with experience in behaviour management issues that arise from students finding themselves in very dysfunctional living conditions. Volunteers are also needed to provide advice on how to promote the school and source funding for the various programs that they run.

Help needed at Warrawong (NSW)

Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation (CUAC) is a community based organisation located at Coomaditchie, an ex-Aboriginal mission. They provide a range of activities and services including: welfare and advocacy services, bush regeneration, art programs, cultural heritage and community development programs.

They are seeking volunteers who are technology savvy to assist with their website maintenance. Volunteers would be asked to take photos of artwork and upload them to their website, keep the website up to date and implement a program to sell artworks on eBay. Volunteers experienced in grant writing would also be very helpful.

Ideally they are seeking local people who would assist one day a week. They are also interested in grey nomads who could commit to a month in the area.

Volunteers needed in Rothbury and Chittaway (NSW)

The Glen has two drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres located at Chittaway (NSW Central Coast) and one at Rothbury (Hunter Valley). They are seeking volunteers one or two days per week.

The skills they are looking for especially are:

  • gardening experience - growing vegetables etc, but you will have plenty of young labour to do the hard work and digging
  • driving experience - help to get clients to and from medical appointments
  • teachers - to help the Indigenous that have little or no reading and writing ability

Volunteers travelling to the Northern Territory

Utopia and Arlparra Schools are seeking volunteers who are planning to travel to the Northern Territory in 2010 or 2011. The school is about 250km from Alice Springs, on a part-bitumen, part-graded road.

They are seeking volunteers to provide in-class one-on-one assistance. Most students are form ESL backgrounds, with low levels of literacy and numeracy. The school also has a brand new kitchen and they would love anyone with the patience and skills to teach cooking.

Due to extreme shortages of accommodation in the community, volunteers with their own caravan and transport are required.
