Make a Difference

National Seniors Foundation Trust is focused on making a positive difference to the lives of senior Australians through all that we do.

Prostate cancer education program

Each year, about 18,700 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Sadly, 3,000 of those men die – this is equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually.

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men. It can also be one of the least threatening cancers. When caught early enough prostate cancer can be cured.

National Seniors Foundation Trust is committed to helping men with prostate cancer, and their families. We have partnered with the Australian Prostate Cancer Collaboration Education Committee to produce a range of quality educational resources:

  • Localised Prostate Cancer: a guide for men and their families: free 88 page prostate guide written for men, the first edition was published in 2001
  • Advanced Prostate Cancer: a guide for men and their families
  • Resources update to assist general practitioners to discuss prostate health with patients: distribution 46,000
  • Prostate health fact sheets to support men and their families through each stage of treatment
A substantially updated third edition of the Localised Prostate Cancer: a guide for men and their families has been released in partnership with the Australian Prostate Cancer Collaboration and supported by National Seniors Foundation Trust.

There are several prostate cancer treatment options available, and no one treatment is known to be the best. Deciding which treatment to accept can be a worrying and often confusing time. The guide assists men and their families to understand prostate cancer and its tests and treatments. It empowers men and their families to make an informed treatment decision.

Over 100,000 copies have been distributed in response to the considerable need for high quality professional and community education resources on prostate cancer. The third edition is available free from The Cancer Council Australia and National Seniors Foundation Trust.

“This is an excellent book. I felt better informed about the options available to me, I could understand exactly what the doctor was speaking about and could engage in informed dialogue. I felt that together we could plot the best course of treatment for me. I also felt that together with the doctor I had control of my cancer treatment.” National Seniors member, Queensland.

Donations to the National Seniors Foundation Trust Prostate Cancer Appeal are always welcomed. Phone 1300 883 752 to make a donation or request a copy of the guide.

National Seniors Foundation Trust Community Grants Program

Many community resources are stretched to capacity. There remains a pressing need for practical support that promotes independence and enables seniors to stay connected to family, friends and their local community. The National Seniors Foundation Trust Community Grants Program has been established in response to this need.

Through the program we support initiatives that make a direct, positive impact at the grass roots level and assist those senior Australians who are doing it tough. See the 2010 community grants recipient list here.

For more than 18 years, National Seniors Foundation Trust has provided much needed practical support in the form of mobility aids, medical equipment, dementia care, palliative care, physiotherapy and rehabilitation equipment to nursing, aged care homes and respite centres.

If you can help National Seniors Foundation Trust to make a positive difference, please donate now. Phone 1300 883 752. Any gift you give will be very gratefully received.
