Victorian seniors pleased with transport and safety announcements in budget

Victorian seniors have welcomed the state government’s commitment in the 2010 budget to improve transport services and public safety.

National Seniors Australia’s Victorian state manager Arnold Bates said the additional police presence on streets and round-the-clock security at 20 additional railway stations would help make seniors feel safer.

“Law and order and public safety has been a big concern to our 50,000 members in Victoria,’’ Bates said.

“We are very happy with this announcement which will see 1966 additional police ‘on the beat’ including at railway stations which are where many seniors feel unsafe.

“The government’s measures to provide more transport services for passengers including $4.3 billion for a regional rail link were also good news for those living outside of Melbourne.”

But Bates was particularly disappointed with the government’s failure to address blatant age discrimination in the Victorian Workcover system which limits cover for workers aged 65 and over.

“We were extremely disappointed with the government overlooking the Workcover system which is an example of blatant ageism.”

Bates welcomed the spending on aged and community care but said these were necessary due to the increasing demand for these services by older Victorians.
He also added that the skills and employment initiatives need to extend to include mature age employees, not just young jobseekers.
