Everything you wanted to know about prostate cancer

Hearing the words ‘prostate cancer’ is shocking but a small book, put out by National Seniors Australia, may give peace of mind through its easy-to-read information.

The book, Localised Prostate Cancer, is a free publication for men and their families, to help them navigate their way through the unfamiliar world of doctors, specialists, treatments, side effects and emotions.

National Seniors Australia’s project manager Karen Furnivall said the book was first published in 2002 and due to demand a new edition, containing the same information with the latest medical research included, is soon to be released.

“We supply the book free and rely on donations to cover the $70,000 cost of printing,” Ms Furnivall said.

“The book is very readable with diagrams and topics covering all aspects of the journey a man will take through his treatment of the cancer. The book is everything you want to know about prostate cancer but don’t know who to ask,” she said.

National Seniors Australia, a non-profit group representing the interests of people aged 50 plus, has branches all over Australia with many members getting behind the fundraising for the book, she said.

With Prostate Cancer Awareness month upon us Ms Furnivall said the latest book is in its final stages of production.

“We have raised $50,000 of the $70,000 for the printing and are still working to raise that last $20,000 so we can meet the demand for the book.

“The book’s popularity triggers a demand for 100,000 copies so we are hoping that organizations and individuals will dig deep and help us reach the target.

“For anyone who doesn’t know what to give dad for Fathers’ Day, perhaps a small donation towards the printing of the book may be the best gift a dad can receive,” Ms Furnivall suggested.
