National Seniors Australia welcomes Labor’s support for seniors – but why leave it to the 11th hour?

National Seniors Australia (NSA) is pleased that the Victorian Labor government is acknowledging seniors in its run-up to election day and is delighted that Premier Brumby has listened and responded to NSA arguments in three key areas: Pensioner Stamp Duty Concession, improved support for HACC and summer energy concessions to match the current winter concession.

Spokesperson for NSA in Victoria Arnold Bates said today that any initiatives encouraging seniors to enjoy a fit and active life, reducing utility costs and the cost of downsizing the home are more than welcome.

“I just hope the initiatives don’t stop here. Seniors, who make up a significant percentage of the population, need to have their issues addressed not just during election campaigns.

“Political parties of all persuasions need to address the major issues facing a growing ageing population. These issues don’t just affect seniors but have serious ramifications for the whole community,” Mr Bates said.

With the population living longer the community is facing increased health, housing and transport costs as well as a labour shortage as seniors exit the workplace.

“NSA will continue to working with all political parties to ensure that seniors are not a forgotten group. We may be ageing, but we still vote,” Mr Bates said.
