Call for stamp duty relief

Seniors in New South Wales are calling on the New South Wales government to deliver some good news on stamp duty when the budget is handed down tomorrow.
National Seniors Australia, which has 90,000 members in NSW, has surveyed its members and prepared a budget submission to the NSW government.
National Seniors NSW spokesperson Paul Versteege said stamp duty relief was an area of concern for members.
“There is widespread frustration among our membership that thus far the New South Wales government has failed to realise how stamp duty relief for downsizers is a win-win for the government, the community generally and seniors,’’ Versteege said.
“The absence of stamp duty relief compels many of our members to continue living in houses that they are unable to maintain or that are unsuitable for their needs.
“The indirect benefits of empowering pensioner households unable to afford downsizing at present to move will not only be the freeing- up of housing stock, but also increased stamp duty revenue from the purchase of pensioners’ homes,” Versteege said.
“Both Victoria and the ACT have recently introduced stamp duty relief for pensioners so why can’t NSW?”
