National Seniors welcomes the Victorian Labor government’s investment of $15 million to fund research and treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
Premier John Brumby today announced a $15 million grant to The Mental Health Research Institute for research to advance a drug treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
National Seniors Victoria spokesperson Arnold Bates said funding was an important part of tackling a disease that affects thousands of Victorians.
“We’re seeing a growing number of cases of Alzheimer’s disease and as the population ages, we can only expect more of these cases,’’ he said.
“That’s why it’s imperative that funding into research is taken seriously by governments to ensure we are working towards getting better treatment for dementia sufferers.”
According to a study by Access Economics, commissioned by Alzheimer’s Australia, dementia cases will grow from about 65,000 to 275,237 by 2050 in Victoria alone.
Alzheimer’s disease represents about 70 per cent of all dementias.
The study showed dementia is the single leading cause of disability in Australians aged 65 and over.
With a quarter of a million members Australia-wide, National Seniors is the consumer lobby for the over-50s. It is the fourth largest organisation of its type in the world.
