Health insurance hike

Seniors slam health insurance hike
Older Australians have slammed the 5.7% percent health insurance premium increase approved today by Health Minister Nicola Roxon.
National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said: “This rise comes only a day after the government’s carbon tax announcement sparked fears amongst retirees of a significant jump in everyday living costs.
“Pensioners and self funded retirees are already grappling with rising food, energy and health costs. Today’s announcement is just another assault on their way of life”.
“Policy-makers must understand that retirees, many of whom are still recovering from the GFC, have very little capacity to adjust to these increases.”
The increase takes effect April 1.

With a quarter of a million members Australia-wide, National Seniors is the consumer lobby for the over 50s. It is the fourth largest organisation of its type in the world.
